My friend Danna asked me what I meant by progressive. I don't know what others think it means but here is my two cents . . .
To me a Progressive Church goes back to the basics regarding some things and moves to the future on others. We put loving our neighbor above all else. This means we love homosexuals and accept them without judgment. It means we love Muslims and people of other races without judgment. The story of the Good Samaritan makes it very clear that we should love other races and find good within them.
It also means equality within the church structure. Women are allowed to take any role men now hold.
The most controversial part is that I think doing what the Holy Spirit says is more important than scripture. This is where I upset people. I think that sometimes there are things in the Bible that are more about tradition of the times than the law. Like a woman wearing a veil.
Also I believe that Christ believed in civil disobedience. He broke the law of the Sabbath. He protested in the temple when he overturned the tables. That means social activism is a good thing today.
